The other Georg Müller vom Siel (1865-1939)–
Looking for sense in psychiatry
12th of december 2013 until the 13th of april 2014
For the first time the Prinzhorn Collection shows the amazing work of the late North German painter Georg Müller vom Siel (1865-1939). The loans come from the Oldenburg Landesmuseum. The artist, usually known as an important late 19th Century landscape painter, is represented here by pictorial speculations about the position of Man in the world. These extraordinary gouaches display a free configuration of abstract shapes, figures and text. They were created in the Wehnen mental hospital, where Müller vom Siel lived from 1909 until his death from starvation in 1939. Works from the Prinzhorn Collection, exploring the meaning of life in similar design languages, are installed beside Müller’s series.
